Ancient Near East, The Levant, Syro-Hittite, Bronze Age, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A delightful hand-built pottery ram vessel, presenting with a thick, lengthy body supported by 4 short legs. Carrying a petite bowl upon its shoulders, the ancient beast gazes forwards from annular eyes above a projecting, square snout, all topped with an incised star motif between a pair of large horns that curve downwards. Likely intended as a toy for a child, the charming creature displays annular drill holes at the end of each leg, which would have held wheels, while the perforation on the goat's wattle was likely strung with a rope, allowing a child to pull the darling animal along with them wherever they went. Size: 7.75" L x 2.75" W x 4.5" H (19.7 cm x 7 cm x 11.4 cm)
