Ancient Near East, Syro-Hittite, ca. 2800 to 1500 BCE. A fine, hand-built pottery female idol standing atop fused legs and petite feet delineated by a small groove, a triangular pudenda with incised hairs, a broad chest with ample breasts held aloft with bent arms, and a slender neck. Her head is more well-defined compared to other more abstract examples with full lips beneath a prominent nose, large circular eyes hidden behind ovoid bangs detailed with lattice-work motifs, and a lobed headdress with a projecting central tab on top. The exterior exhibits traces of white pigmentation, suggesting this piece was once colored with bright pigments. Astarte is an ancient goddess, known throughout the Near East and Central Asia by many names, who is primarily associated with femininity, fertility, motherhood, and war. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 1.625" W x 5.25" H (4.1 cm x 13.3 cm); 5.4" H (13.7 cm) on included custom stand.
