Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A fabulous Roman mosaic composed of thousands of individually hand-cut, multicolored stone tiles called tesserae. The composition features Eros, his feet firmly planted on a leafy, vine-like garland, with his arms lifted - a spear in his right hand and a shield in his left - as he prepares to strike at a charging lion shown with its mouth open. Two lush, leafy garlands enclose both figures, displaying the decorative skill for which Roman mosaics are renowned. Exceptionally well-preserved, this scene likely served as part of the border to a highly important central image. Size: 56" W x 28.75" H (142.2 cm x 73 cm)

Border area missing some of the tesserae, other tesserae probably replaced in modern times. Appears quite excellent
