Pre-Columbian, central Peruvian highlands, Inca, ca. 1400 to 1532 CE. The Inca have been appreciated as some of the finest stone workers of all ancient cultures. Their temple and fortress walls are so perfectly formed you cannot slide a credit card into the seams, even on walls that are multi-sided, like the walls seen in Cusco or Sacsayhuaman. Such is the perfection of this stone bowl. Almost perfectly round, sides consistently curved, feet following the curve of the wall's upper side and perfectly placed and virtually the exact same size. Bowls of this form were used as mortars, probably used in ritual events and quite possibly for the creation of hallucinogenic substances. The ancient cultures sure knew how to party like it's 1499! Size: 7" W x 4.625" H (17.8 cm x 11.7 cm)
Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico collection, ex Allan Davis collection acquired from Robert Morris Fine Art around 2000.
