Ancient Central Asia, southern Azerbaijan and northern Iran, Ardabil region, Middle Bronze Age, ca. 2100 BCE. A hand-built pottery pitcher of large and intriguing form with a spherical body decorated in bands of incised zigzags and X-shaped motifs. The vessel bears a strap handle arching above the flared spout, and the gray-hued exterior surfaces exhibit a nice smoothness to them. The eye-catching component of this artifact is the lengthy, beak-shaped pouring spout that features a pair of raised flanges as well as a broad thumb rest with 2 petite indentations, perhaps representing the eyes of an abstract zoomorph. Size: 11.375" L x 8.25" W x 10.3" H (28.9 cm x 21 cm x 26.2 cm)
