Central Asia, Tibet, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is an exceptional temple seal of sterling silver adorned with semi-precious stones and coral then topped by a massive turquoise stone! The base and stamp face is a copper plate engraved with the Tibetan "om" symbol. The tiered and balustered silver body is elaborately decorated with relief floral and animal motifs, including dragons, skulls, scorpions, and frogs. Set into bezels around the foot and central neck are 35 coral, copal, and turquoise stones. The upper finial contains the enormous turquoise, lightly polished but in its natural state. The form fitting silver panel on the verso features Padmasambhava seated within a flaming arch with a bowl in his lap and a trident. This stamp was a ceremonial and largely symbolic piece that was rarely used - if at all - simply due to this hefty weight and size, and likely resided on an altar as a gorgeous devotional piece! Size: 7" W x 19.5" H (17.8 cm x 49.5 cm); silver quality: 92.27% to 96.93% weight: 6168.86 grams (13.6 lb.)
Padmasambhava, also referred to as Guru Rinpoche in Tibet, thought to be among the most important masters who brought Buddhism to Tibet during the 8th century.
