Native American, southwestern United States, Zuni, ca. 1890s CE. A stunning coil-formed pottery jar with a concave circular base, a wide, apple-shaped body, rounded shoulders with a tapered neck, and a thin rim overhanging the deep basin. The vessel is enveloped in a base layer of white slip and then decorated with intricate curvilinear, spiraling, crosshatch, and diamond-form motifs in hues of black and russet. The body features encircled, five-petaled flowers on either side, a pair of concentric lines enclosing three abstract avian figures, abstract tiered forms within steepled borders flanked with spiraling hooks, and concentric diamonds within cloud-form terminals along the neck. The rim exhibits a thin black stripe on the interior and exterior surfaces, and the base is embellished with a solid russet-red color. An exemplary vessel from the Zuni! Size: 13.4" diameter x 10.4" H (34 cm x 26.4 cm).
