P.D. Arent (French, 20th century). Untitled oil on canvas of a French seaside town, 1962. Signed and dated on lower right. A beautiful painting of a picturesque French seaside town, the shore lined with bobbing fishing boats in the wavy Atlantic, nestled below red-roofed townhouses. All is delineated with expressive brushwork and a rich impasto technique, with thick layers of paint demonstrating the artist's masterful command of the palette knife and creating a marvelous texture, in a beautiful color palette that captures the sun dappled land and sea. Size of painting: 21.25" L x 25.5" W (54 cm x 64.8 cm) Size of frame: 22" L x 26.5" W (55.9 cm x 67.3 cm)
The town depicted in this painting is most likely Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a fishing port and beloved resort in Basque Country, which was traditionally a popular summertime vacation destination for both French and Spanish aristocrats. Saint-Jean-de-Luz is known for beauty as well as its rich history. The port town rose to prominence during the 16th and 17th centuries due to its legendary maritime endeavors, which interestingly included some dubious privateering - essentially government licensed pirates. What's more, in 1660, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church was the site of Louis XIV and Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain's wedding, adding further prestige to Saint-Jean-de-Luz' reputation. Today, Saint-Jean-de-Luz is best known for its stunning Basque coastline, boasting exquisite natural beauty thanks to its brilliant sunlight and sandy bay, as well as charming architecture.
