Pre-Columbian, Colombia, possibly Tairona or Sinu, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. An incredible necklace comprised of 18 gold jaguar claw shaped beads (comprised of 55% gold or equivalent to 12K+ gold) created via the lost wax (cire perdue) process as well as dozens and dozens of disc-shaped greenstone and translucent rock crystal beads arranged in an attractive symmetrical design with a large trapezoidal rock crystal central pendant. In the Pre-Columbian world, leaders and shaman believed that they could use bodily adornments in the form of symbolic animals - jaguars as well as crocodiles, bats, and others - to demonstrate prowess as well as cross earthly boundaries into the realm of the deities. For the individual who once owned these gold jaguar beads, the animal may have been a clan or family emblem. In addition, the jaguar beads undoubtedly advertised the wearer’s power and fierce nature. Size: 17" L (43.2 cm); each jaguar claw bead measures ~ 1.25" L (3.2 cm); rock crystal pendant measures .75" L x .625" W (1.9 cm x 1.6 cm)
The jaguar symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. As a nocturnal animal that sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, the jaguar also evoked great mystery. No wonder this wild feline captured the ancients' imaginations.

Condition
Beads are ancient. Strung in modern times with modern fittings. Some casting flaws to the jaguar claw beads and a few have been stabilized with a translucent material. Stone beads show slight age wear. Overall, a lovely piece of wearable art.
