North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, Honoka'a, ca. mid-20th to early 21st century CE. This is a fine koa wood plate, hand-made in the traditional Hawaiian style with gorgeous natural graining. The dish rests on a gently rounded base that rises and curves inward at the peripheries to create a nearly imperceptible slanted rim. The circular form is highly polished and smoothly sculpted - the stunning striations and natural knot give the plate the appearance of the planet Jupiter! The underside features a carved inscription that reads "Brantley Center / Honokaa, Hawaii." Interestingly, in the Hawaiian language, the word koa means "fearless warrior," a strong name for this beautiful wood! Size: 10.75" Diameter x 1" H (27.3 cm x 2.5 cm)
The consignor of this lot and Artemis Gallery will donate 100% of proceeds to the Brantley Center in Honokaa, Hawaii.
