Western Europe, Spain, Toledo, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A striking iron sword with a grip carved from the bone of an ungulate and a double-edged blade with "EN TOLEDO" inscribed along both fullers. The iron blade tapers to a point, fit at its base with a straight, faceted crossguard adorned by incised striations and berry-shaped finials. Another faceted iron band rises outward from the crossguard, forming a loop with a decorative sphere at the center just above the cylindrical bone grip, which is incised with a spiraling line wrapping it horizontally. A pair of iron rings with diagonal striations sit above and below the grip, while a globular iron pommel, also with diagonal striations, surmounts the hilt. Chip to tip of blade. Some indentations and scratches to blade and grip. Expected nicks and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age. Some dulling to blade edge. Pommel and rings on hilt slightly loose. Otherwise, intact and excellent with great patina. Fuller inscribed "EN TOLEDO" on both sides.
