Pre-Columbian, northwestern Argentina (Calchaqui Valley to San Juan Province), La Aguada culture, ca. 600 to 900 CE. An extremely rare hand-built terracotta bird effigy vessel with a high relief head and tail protruding from the rounded vessel's shoulders and bas relief legs beneath a ridged, carinated lower band. The vessel sits upon a raised concave foot, and a flared rim rises above. The attention to detail on this piece is impressive. Notice the applied bas relief disc motifs alternating with raised ridges atop the bird's head as well as the avian's concentric circular bulging eyes, and well-delineated beak. Furthermore, the birds' wings are incised on the vessel's exterior walls and contain marvelous avian and zoomorphic creatures surrounded by cross-hatch motifs. Size: 8" in diameter x 8" H (20.3 cm x 20.3 cm)
The Aguada culture flourished in the vicinity of the province of Catamarca in Argentina and was greatly influenced by the Tiwanaku/Tihuanaco culture of the Central Andes. The pottery featured abstract depictions of both humans and animals. Other strong examples of La Aguada pottery may be viewed at the Museum of La Plata in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
