Europe, Spanish Renaissance, Spain or Portugal, ca. 1525 to 1550 CE. A charming oil on board painting of a Nativity scene set in a marvelous gilded frame. The focus of the composition is the Christ Child holding a globus cruciger, surrounded by Mary and Joseph who are presented kneeling respectfully with downcast eyes and prayerful gestures. Each member of the Holy Family is depicted with a golden halo. Directly behind the Holy Family are an ox and ass in the stable as is traditional. Behind Mary is one of the three shepherds who has come to adore the baby Jesus. As told by Luke (2:1-20), the shepherds led by an angel came to worship the Christ child. Note the angel in the sky above leading the two other shepherds and their sheep occupying a beautiful pastoral setting with a church upon a hill and mountains in the distance. The painting is set in a marvelous frame that is covered in thick layers of gold leaf. Size: 20.625" L x 17.25" W (52.4 cm x 43.8 cm); 28.25" L x 23.5" W (71.8 cm x 59.7 cm) including frame

Condition
Painting shows nice areas of craquelure. Slight separation/nicks to some edges where it meets the frame. Minor scuffs/fissures/losses to gold leaf on frame as shown. Some age cracks/losses to wood panel placed behind the painting for security - visible from the top and bottom edges - that do not appear to threaten the integrity of the work. Grey paint applied to external edges of this panel - behind the gold leaf frame. Painting could benefit from a cleaning; however, the imagery is still quite strong. Cork panels attached to verso.
