- Lot Description
Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 18th c. A glorious oil on canvas painting depicting St. Joseph (San Jose) cradling the Baby Jesus in his right arm. St. Joseph wears a ruby red cloak over his emerald green robe, and the Christ Child is dressed in a rose red robe with an azure blue sash tied around his waist. The Child is asleep and leans his head and left hand upon Joseph's shoulder. Peacefully gazing at the Child, St. Joseph holds a staff of white lilies in the crook of his left arm. The revered holiness of both figures is signified via Joseph's golden crown, rays of gold emanating from Christ's head, and an aura of hallowed light surrounding the pair. The setting reflects their tranquil bliss - birds are fluttering in the verdant foliage of the trees, flowers are blooming, and nature's brilliant colors imbue the composition with a divine quality. Size: 43.875" L x 31.75" W (111.4 cm x 80.6 cm)
The cult of Joseph originated during the time of Luther when the Catholic Church was seeking out new heroes to meet the needs of the Counter Reformation. Prior to this time, Joseph was somewhat ignored. The Carmelite Order, under the direction of St. Theresa, rejuvenated the image of St. Joseph. Instead of being portrayed as an elderly man who watched over Mary, he grew to be depicted as a virile man in the prime of his life, full of youth and strength, yet portrayed as a gentle man of tenderness as we see in this example.
