Ancient Near East, Southern Arabia, near modern day Yemen, ca. late 1st millennium BCE. A wonderful leaded bronze applique in the form of a sphinx facing left with one forepaw raised. The mythical creature features a traditional leonine body with an upward swooping wing and the head of a female presenting an idealistic visage with a coiffure neatly arranged in a halo of curls. A striking and enigmatic artifact, embodying the fusion of Egyptian-inspired iconography with the distinctive artistic traditions of the Arabian Peninsula and standing as a testament to the region's rich cultural exchange and artistic innovation during the 1st millennium BCE, when the South Arabian kingdoms thrived. Size: 3.8" W x 3.4" H (9.7 cm x 8.6 cm); 4.2" H (10.7 cm) on included custom stand.
