South Arabia, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, ca. 2nd century BCE to 2nd century CE. A charming sculpture of a goat hand-carved from creamy-peach hued alabaster and shown seated with all 4 legs bent beneath him. Capped by a pair of large, spiraling horns, the visage of the ancient animal features a round snout, incised nostrils, a slender mouth, and applied pottery eyes with gray pupils. His plump body lays atop attenuated legs, while a large, tab-like tail, which is incised with abstract geometric motifs, extends from his posterior. Head reattached with break line visible. Losses to horns and periphery of base. Some light abrasions and softening of detail, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice.
