Ancient Seas, North America, ca. 400 to 50 million years ago. This is an amazing pendant that is a fossilized ammonite, polished and carved into a humanoid profile and set in a sterling silver bezel. The ammonite has a naturally spiraling shell, the wider chamber opening is relief carved with sharp cheek bones, delicate nose, and a curled brow. The rest of the spiraling chamber curls back from the brow, as if the head had sprouted ram horns, and the terminal tips have some nice iridescence! The other side is uncarved and shows off the internal chambers and crystalline structures. The name "ammonite" came from Pliny the Elder after the Egyptian god Ammon, who was typically depicted wearing ram's horns that Pliny thought these fossils resembled. It is likely this face is a modern imagining of this ancient deity, fittingly made from his namesake! The shell is set in a sterling sawtooth bezel with a bail that is strung on a cord as a unique wearable necklace. Size (pendant): 1.5" Diameter (3.8 cm); (cord): 21" L (53.3 cm); silver quality: 95.6%; total weight: 10.8 grams
