Signed by the artist in pencil on lower right. An embossed printers mark on lower right corner of paper. Signed in pencil by none other than Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and featured in Vonnegut's Discover Card advertisement on television, "Helen" is a wonderfully abstract visage of a woman with mesmerizing, large eyes, a proud nose, and full heart-shaped lips topped by a short coiffure and extending from a long, slender neck - all in a striking color palette of peach, sienna, black, and white. Although best known for his literature, Vonnegut was also an accomplished visual artist who specialized in abstract faces delineated in a bold color palette. Size: 13.25" W x 22.25" H (33.7 cm x 56.5 cm); 18.625" W x 23" H (47.3 cm x 58.4 cm) with mat
When invited to enter an exhibition featuring artwork by authors, in the esteemed company of Norman Mailer and Tennessee Williams, Vonnegut said, "I've drawn all my life, on the edges of manuscripts and things like that. But I started thinking, 'This is the amateur approach.' ...So I decided to take myself seriously as an artist... My father was an artist, my grandfather was an artist, and I have three children who are accomplished artists."
