Salvador Dali, Two Color Photolith, title page for Dali's interpretation of the Currier & Ives series, signed and dated 1971 by Dali, numbered 275/300 and signed in pencil below, published by Phyllis Lucas, New York. Dali reproduced the original ornate border used for the Currier & Ives logo with a Dalian touch by turning it upside down, putting his own crown on the top, and adding calligraphic flourishes. It reads, "Colored Lithographs For the People… The World of Currier & Ives as interpreted by Salvador Dali Les Fleurs Et Fruit, Fire, Fire, Fire, American Yacht Race, Central Park Winter New York, American Trotting Horses I and II… For Sale Here." There are six original limited edition lithographs in the series plus this two color photolith title page…..Dali’s Presentation…. in the series. Each of the six lithographs of the series has a miniature reproduction of the old Currier & Ives subject collaged to the image. Size: 32" L x 25" W (81.3 cm x 63.5 cm)
The Springfield Field Museums, has one of these title pages in their collection. According to their curatorial team, "Salvador Dali, known for his Surrealist paintings of the 1930s and 1940s, created a number of lithographs based on popular culture. During his lifetime, he collected Currier & Ives prints as a reminder of his childhood and in response to the popularity of the publishers. In 1971, Dali produced a suite of six prints inspired by Currier & Ives. The first print in the series is a reinterpretation of the original Currier & Ives logo that the company used to advertise their prints. Dali turned the design upside down and personalized it with calligraphic lines and drawings of fantastic creatures."
