Robert Natkin (American, 1930-2010), Apollo Series, "Coltrane", 1971, lithograph using 5 separate stones, signed and dated in pencil on lower right. Inscription "For Elaine Dubois" on lower left. This stunning lithograph of intensely colorful abstraction is an early jazz oriented composition entitled "Coltrane". As is often the case for Robert Natkin's work, it is part of a series called "Apollo" and created using columns, shifting planes, and grids. Natkin was inspired by the lively and lyrical use of color by Matisse and Bonnard, Paul Klee's Cubism, jazz music, and film noir masters like Alfred Hitchcock. Set in a custom mat and frame under glass. Size: 23.5" L x 35.5" W (59.7 cm x 90.2 cm); 29.75" L x 41.5" W (75.6 cm x 105.4 cm) framed
Born in Chicago, Robert Natkin graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1952. He then married artist Judith Dolnick, and they lived in Chicago where Natkin and a colleague opened the Wells Street Gallery which operated from 1957 to 1959. When Wells Gallery closed, Natkin moved to New York City and began showing his art with Poindexter Gallery.
