Rico Eastman (American, 1952-2012). Untitled steel sculpture. Signed and dated "Eastman 1992". An abstract, Corten steel pillow sculpture made by renowned metal artist Rico Eastman. The composition features two square tufted pillows, one on top of the other, the pair offset so as to create a star-like shape when viewed together from the top down. The piece is signed and dated "Eastman 1992" on one of the pillows. Known for large-scale steel sculptures, Rico Eastman was engaged in abstraction and aimed to convey concepts of space and tension as well as rhythmic patterns with his sculptures. Eastman earned his B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design and his M.F.A. from Arizona State University. His works have been exhibited and collected both nationally and internationally. In addition, Eastman was a visiting artist at numerous colleges and universities throughout the United States. Size: 16.75" L x 16.75" W x 4.875" H (42.5 cm x 42.5 cm x 12.4 cm)
Eastman is known for his large-scale sculptures. According to KM Fine Arts, " His sculptures are comprised of a series of interlocking planes that curve and slip into one another, like individual puzzle pieces, to form a larger abstract construction. With massive sheets of rolled Corten steel, Eastman was effortless able to manipulate gravity and metal alike into large-scale constructs of soaring tension and exquisite beauty. The massive Corten steel pieces are held in place by gravity and weight tensions on the points of transition. Although the individual steel planes are large and heavy (each weighing several hundred pounds), their interlocking construction and thin forms appear to delicately balance on only a few points and edges to suggest something light and transitory."
Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired from the artist in 2001
