Rene Jules Lalique (French, 1860-1945). "Sauterelles" art glass vase, 1912. Number 888. Signed (acid etched) "LALIQUE" on underside near edge of base. A delightful clear glass "Sauterelles" vase with blue staining designed in 1912 by the great Rene Lalique, a French master jeweler who was famous for his luxury glassware of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. The botanical composition displays a whimsical design of grasshoppers resting on long reeds of grass that arch across one another in a natural lattice pattern. The vessel highlights the master's love of the bold forms and natural motifs that typified his output. Mold-formed from clear glass with blue staining, this vase embodies the elegance and artistry of Lalique's most beloved designs. Size: 10.25" Diameter x 10.875" H (26 cm x 27.6 cm)
Rene Lalique studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs de Paris and worked as a designer for jewelers in the 19th century prior to establishing his own atelier. In 1900, Lalique exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris thus establishing himself as a master jeweler. He went on to concentrate on glassmaking, creating striking bowls as well as perfume bottles and other vessels, embellishing his forms with intricate reliefs. In 1921, Lalique built a glassworks factory at Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace.
A nearly identical "Sauterelles" vase hammered 43,750 GBP (equivalent to $73,871.88 at the time) at Christie's London on April 30, 2014 (Live Auction 10052, "Lalique: An Important Private Collection, lot 51).
