Gerard Mortier (French, b. 1951), "La Vente Des Moules", oil on canvas, 2010. Signed by the artist on the lower right. Title handwritten on stretcher bar. A beautiful painting presenting a mesmerizing scene of a bustling Parisian market. The luminescent immaculate blue and white awnings, and brilliant yellow and pink umbrellas are typical of Mortier’s work. Using a thick application of paint with a palette knife and brush, impasto style, and large vertical and horizontal planes of brilliant color, he makes this Parisian urban scene come to life. Size: 32" W x 24" H (81.3 cm x 61 cm)
Born in 1951 in Boulogne sur Mer, France, Gerard Mortier has been dubbed the "Ambassador of the Opal Coast" and most of his works depict lands on the English Channel - palpably capturing the power of the wind and sea that characterize this region of France. In addition, Mortier depicts various locales when traveling. When not traveling, Gerard also finds subjects to paint in the tranquil garden of his rustic country home in the northern part of his country. This urban scene is more unusual in his oeuvre.
