Louis Lozowick (Russian-born, 1892-1973, came to US in 1920s), "Trees and Mountains" lithograph, signed and dated "Louis Lozowick '30" in pencil on lower right, monogram at lower left,"Trees & Mts" written in pencil on the lower left of margin, from an edition of 15. A beautifully rendered landscape by Louis Lozowick, a Russian immigrant artist who was active in the US in the early 20th century and best known for his modern interpretations of the visual environment. Size: image measures 7.625" L x 11.75" W (19.4 cm x 29.8 cm); sheet measures 11.125" L x 15.75" W (28.3 cm x 40 cm); portfolio/mat measures 16" L x 20" W (40.6 cm x 50.8 cm)
Born and educated in Kiev, Russia, Louis Lozowick immigrated to the United States and studied at the National Academy of Design with Leon Kroll and Emil Carlsen from 1912 to 1915. Subsequently, Lozowick worked and studied in Paris and Berlin in the 1920s as an artist and set designer and also visited Russia. He returned to New York in the second half of the twenties and began his series "The Cities" that included New York, Butte (Montana), Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Panama, Pittsburgh, and Seattle. During the 1930s, he worked for the WPA in various divisions while also as an illustrator for many magazines. His modern urban themes are the most popular today; however, he also produced landscapes and social realistic prints and drawings that have broad appeal. The standard study of his work is "The Prints of Louis Lozowick. A Catalogue Raisonne" by Janet Flint (New York, 1982).
