Leo Meiersdorff (German-born American, 1934-1994). "New Orleans" watercolor, 1970. Signed, dated, and titled on lower right. An outstanding signed Leo Meiersdorff watercolor depicting four jazz musicians. From left to right: trumpet player, pianist, saxophone player, and bassist. All are rendered in Leo Meiersdorff's expressive style, using brilliant color and adept brushstrokes to capture the improvisatory quality of jazz. According to writer Scott Yanow, "His colorful depictions of jazz musicians have a distinctive personality that conveys the joy and excitement of the music." A superb and quite sizeable example of Meiersdorff's expressionist figural paintings. Size: 29.25" W x 21.25" H (74.3 cm x 54 cm)
Born in Berlin, Meiersdorff was interested in painting from a very early age. He studied at the Berlin Art Academy and was a master student of Expressionist artist Oskar Kokoschka in Austria. Other artistic influences included members of the early modern movement Die Brucke (The Bridge), Max Pechstein and art professor Karl-Schmidt Rottluff. Jazz was another love of Meiersdorff's, and in Berlin, he led his own jazz combo. Meiersdorff became a permanent resident of the US in 1966, living in southern California, New York City, as well as Germany. Meiersdorff simultaneously pursued his visual art and his love for jazz. He enjoyed listening to Thelonious Monk perform in New York City, portrayed Dizzy Gillespie in several paintings, and also frequented the famous Slug’s club as well as Shelly’s Manne-Hole in Hollywood.
According to jazz journalist and critic Scott Yanow, "The Leo Meiersdorff Estate has been licensing some of his works to support a variety of organizations including those involved in jazz education. The television industry has licensed artwork to use in the background including NBC Universal’s 'Chicago Fire', 'The Flash' (Warner Bros.) and the second season of CBS' 'NCIS: New Orleans.' In 2015, there were exhibits of many of his jazz paintings and posters at the Monterey Jazz Festival and Jazz at Filoli. This summer (he did not specify the year) The Jazz Loft, a museum in Stony Brook, Long Island that is devoted solely to jazz, is having a Leo Meiersdorff exhibition that will feature Jennifer giving a presentation about his life and art, along with a performance by a big band."
