Karel Appel (Dutch, 1921–2006). Lithograph in colors, 1962. Signed "Appel 62" in pencil at lower right. Numbered 16/210 in pencil at lower left. A striking composition by Dutch avant-garde artist Karel Appel, whose painterly expression and vibrant color palette make for a mesmerizing piece, set in a custom frame. Appel drew great inspiration from children's drawings as well as folk art and works by outsider artists. Among the most important artists of the second half of the 20th century, Appel employed modernist aesthetics with his own twist, employing spontaneity and transgressing traditional rules and boundaries throughout his career which lasted almost six decades. Size of sight view: 17.375" L x 22" W (44.1 cm x 55.9 cm) Size of frame: 28" L x 32.125" W (71.1 cm x 81.6 cm)
Karel Appel studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten and had his first solo exhibition in 1946. Inspired by artists like Paul Klee and Joan Miro as well as children's drawings, folk art, and outsider art, Appel rejected traditional academic approaches and created his own innovative approach. He was a founding member of the avant-garde group known as CoBrA (an acronym for the cities Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam where the various artists originated) which espoused a rejection of geometric abstraction and rationalism. When CoBrA dissolved in 1952, Appel joined Art Informel, another group of innovative artists which included Michel Tapie and Henri Michaux. Appel had several solo exhibitions throughout his almost six decade long career, and his works have been collected by elite museums, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
