Buffalo Kaplinski (American, b. 1943). "Stones at Sacsahuaman" acrylic on board, 2020. Signed on lower right. A beautiful painting of Sacsahuaman (also spelled Sacsayhuaman, Saqsaywaman, and several other ways) - a citadel on the outskirts of Cusco, Peru built by the Inca during the 15th century under Pachacuti and his successors. American artist Buffalo Kaplinski captured the fortress en plein aire under blue skies as sunlight and shadow played wonderful light effects with the scene. Some say that Cuzco was laid out in the shape of a sacred puma and Sacsahuaman formed its head and jaws. Size: 9.875" W x 6.75" H (25.1 cm x 17.1 cm) Size w/ triple matte: 19.5" W x 16.75" H (49.5 cm x 42.5 cm)
Buffalo Kaplinski studied at the American Academy of Art and the Chicago Art Institute. He moved to Taos, New Mexico in 1967 where he became an outstanding contemporary landscape artist, working in both acrylic and watercolor. His work has been exhibited by the American Watercolor Society, the Artists of America show, and the National Academy of Design. In addition to painting the natural environs of the American Southwest, and being honored as an invited artist in the "Rims and Ruins Exhibit - Paintings done at Mesa Verde National Park, Durango, Colorado" (2014) he has created plein air paintings in approximately twenty five countries.
