Lucien Walery (French, 1863-1929). Photograph ofcr in "Paris En Folie". 1920s. A photograph of Josephine Baker (American-born French expatriate, 1906-1975) by photographer Lucien Walery of Paris. Baker - an entertainer in France who went on to be a French-Resistance agent and Civil Rights activist - is posing topless in one of her elaborate costumes in "Paris En Folie". The photo is signed and inscribed, "To King of the 'Black' Bottom' 'To charming Monsieur Marly' Sincerely Josephine Baker August 22/27 Paris". Another inscription on the verso reads, "He is vey-rey Good in his Dancing / O.K. Mr. Marly / Josephine Baker." At this time, Baker was only 21 years old. Interestingly, Baker was known for her famous Banana Dance which was similar to the Black Bottom, a dance that became very popular in the 1920s. Originating in New Orleans, the Black Bottom became even more popular than the Charleston! Size: 8" W x 10.25" H (20.3 cm x 26 cm); 11.125" W x 13.25" H (28.3 cm x 33.7 cm) framed
Here is historian Ean Wood's description of Josephine Baker's costume for the finale of Paris En Folie, "Un Vent De Folie' opened in April 1927. Josephine's costumes were even more elaborate than they were the year before … For the finale, 'Paris En Folie', Josephine wore an extraordinary costume vaguely reminiscent of a harlequin - delicately patterned spangled tights decorated with pom-poms, red gloves with little balls on the fingertips, a sort of feather duster swinging from each hip and a larger one sticking straight up from a small conical cap on her head. Audiences found it sensational." (Ean Wood, "The Josephine Baker Story," p. 125)
