Joseph Descomps-Cormier (French, 1869-1950). Female nude ceramic sculpture, ca. 1920s. Signed, numbered 37/100 and inscribed 'epreuve d'artist' with a special seal on the back of the base. A beautiful sculpture of a nude female, perhaps a goddess or a muse, by French sculptor Joseph Descomps-Cormier (also called Joe Descomps-Cormier) who notably participated in the art competition at the 1924 Summer Olympics. The sensitively modeled Art Nouveau nude presents with an elegant pose - her curvaceous body leaning into an S-curve, her right elbow placed upon a pedestal, drapery cascading over the pedestal as well as behind her body and pooling between her legs. She holds a palm frond fan in her right hand, grips the drapery (which is embellished with seafoam green glaze) with her left hand, while turning her angelic visage, boasting idyllic features and crowned by long wavy locks adorned by a diadem, toward her left. Size: 13.875" H (35.2 cm)
Born in Clermont-Ferrand, Joseph Emmanuel Descomps-Cormier exhibited at the Salon des Artists in Paris where he won medals in 1921, 1925, and 1928. Descomps-Cormier also exhibited his Art Nouveau and Art Deco sculptures (bronze, stone, and ceramic) at the Salon d'Automne and the Tuileries. Descomps-Cormier's work may be found in museum collections throughout France including Musee d'Orsay, Musee du Louvre Departement des Sculptures, Musee du Luxembourg, and Musee National d'art Moderne.
