Liuboslav Hutsaliuk (Ukrainian-American, 1923-2003). Untitled (Sunflowers), print, ca. 1970s, edition 26/80 written in pencil at lower left. Signed "hutsaliuk" in pencil at lower right. A wonderful composition by one of the best known Ukrainian artists residing in the United States during the 20th century. Liuboslav Hutsaliuk (whose first name was also spelled Lubomyr, Luboslau, Ljuboslav, or shortened to Lubo and surname also spelled Hucaljuk) is best known for his neo-impressionist cityscapes, landscapes and still lifes. This lithograph is an outstanding example of his work, delineated in a warm palette of yellow, black, and white. During the 1960s, Hutsaliuk became associated with the Soyuzivka, a Ukrainian American artistic center in New York City. In addition to being a masterful painter, Hutsaliiuk was also a caricaturist and cartoonist. His drawings were published in the satirical journal "Lys Mykyta". Furthermore, Hutsaliuk published art reviews in the newspaper "Svoboda" as well as the journal "Suchasnist". Le Hors-Cote waxed poetically about Hutsaliuk in 1959, "This urban landscape artist seems to inlay his colors into the canvas to give us cityscapes that haunt us with their new faces."(Ukrainian Weekly, 28 December 2003) Hutsaliuk's works may be found internationally in collections in France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, as well as the Palm Springs Desert Museum and Vermont Arts Center in United States. Provenance: ex-Damien and Oksana Lishchyssky, the painting was a gift from the artist himself, Liuboslav Hutsaliuk, between 1950s and 1980s, as the Lishchysskys were close friends of Hutsaliuk - Painting is accompanied by a notarized letter from Lada Lishchyssky attesting to this provenance.

Set in custom mat and frame under glass. Numbered and signed in pencil below image. Has not been examined outside the frame but appears to be in excellent condition save very slight toning to paper.
