Frank George Hodgkinson (Australian, 1919-2001). "Frog and River" etching (numbered 1/100, signed "Frank Hodgkinson '84" and titled below image) in a limited edition of Hodgkinson's book"Sepik Diary" (signed and numbered 104 of 600 copies on page opposite "Frog and River"). Also included is a brochure from the accompanying exhibition with a handwritten note to Betty Silverstein in which the artist states that he "managed to grab No. 1" (meaning 1/100 edition of the "Frog and River" etching) for Mrs. Silverstein. In addition, there is a dedication to Mrs. Silverstein in which he states, "I do hope you enjoy this journey down the river."Joining these is the postumously published book entitled, "Penseri thoughts on paper Frank Hodgkinson" (Book House: Wild & Woolley Pty Ltd, Glebe: Australia, 2002) that features the artist's "writings, musings, and insights" from sketchbooks that cover 60 years of his creative process, collected by Kate and Zoe Hodgkinson. Frank George Hodgkinson was born in Sydney in 1919. He studied art with Dattilo Rubbo and Sydney Long. During WW II, he served in North Africa with the Australian Imperial Forces, campaigned against the Vichy French in Syria and on the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea. Later as a war artist, he recorded the landings in Borneo. Immediately post war he studied at L’ Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, Paris and with Bernard Meninsky at the Central School of Art in London. Between 1947 and 1953, he lived and worked in Paris, Florence, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona and London. From 1958, he returned to work and exhibit in Europe, living mostly in Spain and in the USA. He returned to Australia in 1971 to live in North Queensland, Melbourne and Sydney where in 1973 he designed and built a house and studio in the Hawksbury River sandstone country where he lived and worked until his death in 2001.
On the back of the brochure for a Hodgkinson exhibition is the following note to Betty Silverstein written in New York in 1984, "Betty dear / When you get this we will have seen you in London - a stroke of good fortune at last. Looking forward. Love, Frank / P.S. Managed to grab No. 1 for you (1/100)". The brochure itself opens with the following, "Since his 1971 'home-coming' Frank Hodgkinson has taken a close look at remote areas of Australia. He calls it a search for the 'other face' of the landscape and its inhabitants. / Returning in 1978 from a 12 month stint as artist-in-residence at the Universtiy of P.N.G. he took a fresh look at the Northern Territory and during these last 5 years has made successive journey in the Kakadu and Arnhem Land … " The other pages of the brochure include a chronology of the artist, a list of exhibitions and awards, works in public collections, a selected bibiliography, and a list of works.
Provenance: private Palm Desert, California, USA collection; acquired by descent from Maurice (Red) Silverstein who was President of MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios) International and Betty Silverstein, known as Betty Bryant, who was a successful actress in Australia prior to marrying Red. Always very active socially in New York City, the couple knew many famous artists, writers, and actors in the 1950's - 1970's.

Condition
Hardcover leather bound "Sepik Diary" with dust jacket is in fine condition - as is the signed etching within. Slight aging to the brochure, but intact and the signed dedication is perfectly legible. "Penseri" is in excellent condition as well.
