Axel Herman Haig (Swedish, 1835-1921), "St. Etienne, Bourges." 1911. Aquatint. Signed in pencil to lower right just below image and within plate mark. Artists monogram and 1911 in plate on lower right. A stunning image of the west façade of Bourges Cathedral dedicated to Saint Stephen (St. Etienne)- widely regarded as one of the world's most beautiful cathedrals, an archetype of French Gothic architecture. The west facade boasts a grand scale in relation to earlier cathedrals. Notice that all four side aisles as well as the central nave have their own distinct portal; this reflects the immense scale of the spaces within. In line with Gothic tradition, the central portal features sculpted reliefs with a Last Judgement theme, and the south portals honor the lives of saints - in this case, St. Ursinus and St. Stephen. Size: plate measures 16.625" L x 22.75" W (42.2 cm x 57.8 cm); sheet measures 24" L x 30.25" W (61 cm x 76.8 cm)
Although the north portals were destroyed when the tower collapsed, the surviving fragments suggest that their sculptural reliefs commemorated the life and death of the Virgin. An elaborate dado screen of gabled niches which stretches the whole width of the facade unifies the five portals. Between these niches are spandrels that narrate a Genesis cycle.
Axel Herman Haig was fascinated with the sea and ships and spent much of his youth sketching seascapes and building model boats. His love of the sea led him to study shipbuilding, but he grew tired of ship design and shifted to architecture. Haig was given the opportunity to design the residence of his employer in Glasgow, who was so pleased with the result that he got Haig a job at a firm that specialized in church design. Later Haig was employed by William Burges, a noted Gothic Revival architect, and he became one of the most noted architectural draughtsmen in Britain.
