Signed Romero - perhaps Tania Romero, oil on canvas of a clown, 1956 - signed and dated on lower left. A vintage painting of a clown - speaking to the popularity of clowns during the mid 20th century. Children of the 1950's will remember Clarabell the clown of the Howdy Doody Show with fondness. And of course there was Bozo the Clown played by Willard Scott (who later became an NBC weatherman), Bob Bell, among others; Bozo was immensely popular between 1959 and 1970. Given this popularity, clowns were depicted by many artists - even the comedian Red Skeleton who also acted as a clown on many occasions - from the 1950s through the 1970's. A wonderful piece, particularly for any fan of comic performers, slapstick, mime, or other physical comedy - and all things vintage! Size: 14" W x 18" H (35.6 cm x 45.7 cm); 18" W x 22" H (45.7 cm x 55.9 cm) including frame
