Agapito Labios was born Agapito Engel Ofuentes in Pachuca, Hidalgo at the close of the 19th century. While imprisoned for participating in the Mexican Revolution, he began painting on the walls of his cell. In time, a high ranking official took notice and commissioned him to create portraits of his children. Labios had found his niche and along with his contemporary, Horacio Renteria, he continued to paint children's portraits for many years. He sold his portraits at the Lagunilla market in Mexico City, and later opened his own shop selling folk art and antiques as well as his own art. Among those who collected his paintings was legendary American actress Katherine Hepburn.
