Howell's poem reads as follows: "Uncertain Weather / Another afternoon of blue-black / Clouds gather thickly / Along the darkening hills. / Earlier, veins of sun, / Gold upon the fields, / Warmed the hope of morning. / Time and again dire warned / Especially myself, of optimism / Weather changes so suddenly. / We are like that, you and I, / Hopeful again, but knowing / for only certainty is uncertainty."
Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Frank Howell studied art as well as writing at the University of Northern Iowa. In the 1960s, he moved to Breckenridge, Colorado, then to Taos, New Mexico, and finally Santa Fe. In addition to being a painter, Howell was a photographer, a master lithographer, as well as an accomplished writer and poet. He worked in various visual art mediums, creating impressive lithographs, monotypes, oils, watercolors, acrylics, drawings, and sculptures. He stated, "I believe that through the communion between the tools, materials, and qualities of lithography and my sensibilities, beauty may be born. It is that communion and my awareness of its potential that perpetuates my search."
