Sabatino De Angelis (Italian, 1838-1910s), Narcissus (from the antiquities, Vicolo del Balcon Pensile in Pompeii), 1905. Signed Sab De Angelis & Fils Naples, 1905. A wonderful Neoclassical copper sculpture of Narcissus in the round, hollow cast and standing in elegant contrapposto with his left hand resting by his hip and his right arm bent and raised, his right hand making a gesture. Tied over his left shoulder is the skin of a goat, and he wears high strapped handles on his feet. Otherwise Narcissus is nude, and quite beautiful. This work is iconographically based upon the Sauroktonos of Praxitiles which the artist reinterpreted as a Dionysiac figure. The figure stands upon a tiered round pedestal that is signed Sab De Angelis & Fils Naples, 1905. Size: 22.875" H (58.1 cm)
