Daniel Wall (Chinese-American, b. 1965)"Winter Embrace" oil on canvas, 2018. Signed in pigment on lower left. Signed and dated on verso of canvas as well. A breathtaking painting of a picturesque winter scene by Daniel Wall who describes his approach as "Intense Impressionism" which is impressive for its undeniable boldness and intensity, hence the name. A couple stands on a bridge amidst a winter wonderland; the snow-covered banks of the river below them are lit by glowing lanterns as snow continues to fall. In Wall's paintings, his sweeping brushstrokes and thick impasto passages created with a palette knife are both expressive and palpable. What's more, his pigment application is rich and vibrant, and the dramatic light effects further intensify the presentation. Wall sees his approach as inheriting the lessons of 19th century Impressionism yet breathing new life into this tradition and engaging in a dialogue with the contemporary world. Size of artwork: 20.25" L x 24.125" W (51.4 cm x 61.3 cm) Size of frame: 31.75" L x 35.625" W (80.6 cm x 90.5 cm)
Born in China, Daniel Wall immigrated to the United States in 1995. First taught by his mother, Wall received a government scholarship to study art at Laiyang Teachers College, an academy that only accepts a few select students each year, when he was just sixteen years old. Wall would also study art in Italy and the United States, earning his Master's degree at Georgia Southern University. Wall calls his artistic genre "Intense Impressionism" and points to 19th century influences including Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, and Seurat. He has published and exhibited widely, also winning awards in his native China as well as Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, and the United States.
