Leon Danchin (French, 1887-1939), "Brussels Griffon with Butterfly", ca. 1930s. Hand-signed in pencil on lower left. Edition 195/500 in pencil at lower right. "Copyright 1931 by La Gravure Francaise 41 rue St. Georges Paris." (upper left). An original engraving - hand finished with watercolor on BFK Rives paper - depicting an adorable Brussels Griffon staring at a colorful butterfly hovering above - created by one of the most beloved artists of dogs. Danchin was especially passionate about dogs, and he is widely recognized as one of the best artists of the canine species. With his fine eye for expression and detail, Danchin has paid homage to "man's best friend" with works like this example. Size: 14.25" L x 11.25" W (36.2 cm x 28.6 cm) - plate; 25.5" L x 19.75" W (64.8 cm x 50.2 cm) - sheet
Born in Lille, France in 1887, Leon Danchin studied sculpture at Ecole des Beaux Art in Paris and was accepted by the Salon des Artists at the age of sixteen. Danchin devoted himself equally to various media - drawing, painting, watercolors, engravings as well as sculpture.
