Alfredo Castaneda (Mexican, 1938-2010) "A flor de piel" 1990. Signed, numbered (44/50), titled, and dated below the image. A limited edition lithograph in colors. Created in his entrancing Surrealistic style, Castaneda's composition features a depiction of a nude male positioned at the lower end of a sage green arched space - with an intentional peeled back circle above that reveals a red orb radiating from a lower layer. The man is nude with a seemingly flayed body. We see his arms held behind his back - hand in hand - just above his buttocks. A red ribbon is attached to the elbow of his right arm. His head is bent backward by 180 degrees, presenting an upside down bearded visage. Characteristic of Castaneda's depictions, the mature visage connotes experience, reflection, consternation, introversion, and melancholy. His pose and physical state suggests a tortured soul. Casteneda was an avid reader of mystical texts that fueled his imagination and provided inspiration for his art. Size: 29.5" L x 22" W (74.9 cm x 55.9 cm); 33" L x 25.25" W (83.8 cm x 64.1 cm) framed
Born in Mexico City, Alfredo Castaneda received his degree in architecture from the University of Mexico in 1964 and had his first solo exhibition at the Galeria de Arte Mexicano in 1969. His surrealist works are in elite museum collections in Latin America, the United States, Europe, and Japan. A retrospective of Castaneda's art was held at the Monterrey (Mexico) Museum in 1990, and a monograph about his oeuvre was published that year as well.
