William Joseph "Bill" Freeman (American, 1927-2012). Oil on canvas, ca. mid 20th century CE. Signed on the lower right. A stunning landscape painting of the red rock cliffs overlooking the flowing waters of the Verde River, bordered by grand canopies of cottonwood and sycamore trees with their golden autumnal foliage - all beneath the brilliant skies of Arizona's Verde Canyon. Freeman is known for his gorgeous color palette, and this painting does not disappoint with azure, aqua, sage, lavender, rose, buttercup, and warm orange hues. In addition, his sophisticated use of brush and palette knife truly brings this scene to life. Size: 22" L x 28" W (55.9 cm x 71.1 cm)
Bill Freeman grew up in West Texas on a farm just outside of El Paso. Interestingly, he worked as a horse wrangler, fought forest fires for the U.S. Forest Service, and was a field researcher and guide for the Arizona Game and Fish Department for twelve years in Arizona, Wyoming, and New Mexico prior to becoming an artist. It was not until the age of 30 that Freeman decided to become an artist specializing in Western landscapes. Today he is considered a pioneer of Western art centered on such storied locales as Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
