William Joseph "Bill" Freeman (American, 1927-2012). Untitled oil on canvas, ca. mid 20th century CE. Signed on lower right. A beautiful landscape painting depicting four elk - one male bull with grand antlers and three female calves - promenading across the foothills of a majestic mountain range delineated in ethereal mauve, violet, and lavender hues, as billowing white clouds roll throughout the azure skies above. All is executed in Freeman's signature style with sophisticated impasto and brushwork techniques. A wonderful view of the American West inhabited by some of our favorite animals. Did you know that the North American elk is among the largest deer species inhabiting the earth? They can weigh up to 700 pounds! What's even more surprising is their speed. Male bulls can run as fast as 40 miles per hour and can jump up to 8 feet vertically! Size: 21.75" L x 28" W (55.2 cm x 71.1 cm)
Bill Freeman grew up in West Texas on a farm just outside of El Paso. Interestingly, he worked as a horse wrangler, fought forest fires for the U.S. Forest Service, and was a field researcher and guide for the Arizona Game and Fish Department for twelve years in Arizona, Wyoming, and New Mexico prior to becoming an artist. It was not until the age of thirty that Freeman decided to become an artist specializing in Western landscapes. Today he is considered a pioneer of Western art centered on such storied locales as Scottsdale, Arizona as well as Jackson Hole and Grand Tetons National Park, Wyoming.
