Alfredo Castaneda (Mexican, 1938-2010), "Toma de Conciencia", lithograph in colors, ed 23/30. 1985. A limited edition original lithograph in colors. Created in his entrancing Surrealistic style, Castaneda's composition features the visages of two individuals positioned head to head in an oval, egg-like arrangement - with an intentional 'crack' at the midline. Occupying the upper half is a beardless gentleman wearing a shirt and tie positioned upside-down, and in the lower half of the image is an elderly, bearded man dressed in black and positioned right-side up. The piece presents dualities of young vs. old, light vs. dark, corporeal vs. spiritual. Characteristic of Castaneda's depictions, the mature visages connote experience, reflection, consternation, introversion, and melancholy. Casteneda was an avid reader of mystical texts that fueled his imagination and provided inspiration for his art. Size: 25" L x 18.75" W (63.5 cm x 47.6 cm); 29.25" L x 23.125" W (74.3 cm x 58.7 cm) including frame
Born in Mexico City, Alfredo Castaneda received his degree in architecture from the University of Mexico in 1964 and had his first solo exhibition at the Galeria de Arte Mexicano in 1969. His surrealist works are in elite museum collections in Latin America, the United States, Europe, and Japan. A retrospective of Castaneda's art was held at the Monterrey (Mexico) Museum in 1990, and a monograph about his oeuvre was published that year as well.
