Alfredo Castaneda (Mexican, 1938-2011), "Nosotros, Mas la Mitad de Nosotros" 1990. Signed, dated, titled, and numbered (39/50) in pencil below the image. A limited edition original lithograph in colors. Created in his entrancing Surrealistic style, Castaneda's composition features 6 conjoined images of the same bearded gentleman wearing a wide-brimmed black hat and black coat. The composition includes 6 seemingly spliced sections of this man's face joined together - sharing a black hat and coat a well as the pair of outstretched hands reaching out below, before a bright blue sky that contrasts with the more somber plum hued skies above his/their shoulders and head. The man's mature visage is one of experience, reflection, consternation, introversion, and melancholy. Casteneda was an avid reader of mystical texts that fueled his imagination and provided inspiration for his art. Size: image measures 22.5" L x 16" W (57.2 cm x 40.6 cm); 34.5" L x 27.5" W (87.6 cm x 69.8 cm) framed
Born in Mexico City, Alfredo Castaneda received his degree in architecture from the University of Mexico in 1964 and had his first solo exhibition at the Galeria de Arte Mexicano in 1969. His surrealist works are in elite museum collections in Latin America, the United States, Europe, and Japan. A retrospective of Castaneda's art was held at the Monterrey (Mexico) Museum in 1990, and a monograph about his oeuvre was published that year as well.
