**First Time At Auction**
Albert Oehlen (German, b. 1954), untitled abstract lithograph in colors on Rives paper, numbered 62/100 in pencil on lower left, signed A. Oehlen in pencil on lower right, ca. 2008 to 2011. A wonderful lithograph that captures Oehlen's expressive, painterly style. When Oehlen's large scale paintings of untitled works were exhibited at Gagosian Gallery in New York City in 2012, he received a glowing review in "Art in America" - "Not since Rauschenberg's Combines of the 1950s have paintings looked so fresh and of their time as did a dozen by Albert Oehlen recently exhibited at Gagosian's uptown gallery." Critic Jeff Frederick continued, "Oehlen applies paint in filmy screens that coalesce into clouds, as in a Turner seascape. There is a subtle, shimmering, yet tossed-off quality about his layers of pigment, which become strange and wonderful graffiti…" Size: sheet measures 26" W x 19.75" H (66 cm x 50.2 cm)
Oehlen studied at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg and graduated in 1978. His star rose in meteoric fashion in the Berlin and Cologne art scenes. Associated with the Junge Wilde artists, including Werner Büttner Martin Kippenberger and Martin Kippenberger, Oehlen aimed to create art that defied pigeon-holing categorization. Engaging in debates concerning the nature of painting, Oehlen deconstructed the medium into its core elements—color, gesture, motion, and time—to escape any constraints on his creative process. Oehlan continued to be loyal to this modus operandus for decades. This has resulted in compositions that embrace both abstract and figurative styles.
