Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, artist: Ola of the Oshogbo School, signed Ola on lower left, ca. 2010. A vibrant ink painting on cotton fabric created by Ola of the Osogbo (Oshogbo) School. This composition features a happy couple riding a bicycle built for two, three more figures to the right - two carrying wares on their heads and one with an animal, two animals to the lower right looking up at the villagers, a few vessels in the field, and quaint homes in the background - all in a striking black and white palette with stylized geometric patterns adorning most elements of the composition. Artists of the Osogbo school (named for a town in southwestern Nigeria) traditionally have been influenced by Yoruba mythology and culture. This piece demonstrates influences of the best known Osogbo school artists including Prince Twins Seven-Seven, Yinka Adeyemi, and the late Asiru Olatunde and Rufus Ogundele. Size: 52" W x 32.5" H (132.1 cm x 82.6 cm)
Oshogbo painting presents lively imagery depicting animals, plants, humans, and Yoruba deities. The compositions resonate with those of Yoruba carvings, and the iconography reflects notions of balance and transformation in addition to dualities such as past and present, the earthly and the spiritual, machines and agriculture.
