Native American, Pacific Northwest, ca. 20th to early 21st century CE. Signed "ShimSham / 'young woman' / W. Tuifua / 199" on verso. A mesmerizing, hand-carved wood mask of a woman adorned with black and red pigment, as well as lengthy braids of red horsehair that fall from the top of her skull. The expressive visage boasts huge, almond-shaped eyes with nacre shell inlay pupils below arched copper brows, a prominent nose with broad nostrils, and full lips held partially open to display a row of shiny, nacre shell teeth. Red pigment adorns either side of her mouth, forming crescent-shaped patterns on both of her high cheekbones. Note how the natural graining of the wood forms graceful waves over visage, adding a beautiful texture to the piece. Size: 7.75" W x 10.25" H (19.7 cm x 26 cm)
