North America, northwestern United States, Alaska, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A fine hand carved wooden totem pole featuring a marvelous Thunderbird with outspread wings presenting meticulously delineated plumage, perched upon other totemic figures, including a bear brandishing an intimidating expression with leering eyes and a toothy, fang-filled open mouth who is clutching a stylized human figure in his grip. The integral square base is engraved via burning into the surface with an additional stylized totemic emblem. The main animal pole and square base are carved from a single piece, and the wings attached separately. The verso near the base contains a label "MADE IN ALASKA / BY RAVEN" and the underside of the base is also hand etched with the same label. Size: 24" L x 4" W x 25" H (61 cm x 10.2 cm x 63.5 cm)
