Mark Kostabi (American, b. 1960). "Balancing Work and Pleasure" oil on canvas, 2020. Hand-signed and dated "Kostabi 2020" in pigment by the artist at lower left. A fabulous painting by Mark Kostabi, depicting a faceless nude female model in a studio, sitting upon a yellow cube with a yellow cup and saucer balanced upon her knees, a bright yellow vase presumably used for still life themes upon a lemon yellow cube-shaped table, and finally, the artist's presence indicated by two open paint tubes with pigment dripping onto a green tabletop joined by a jar of paintbrushes as well as a single paintbrush above the Kostabi's signature. Most striking is the faceless figure, a signature motif of Kostabi's oeuvre. "Why are the figures faceless? It's a universal language free of racial limitations, and a reflection of society's fear of individuality." (Source: Martin Lawrence Galleries press release, April 9, 2018).
