Europe, English or German, ca. 19th century CE. Signature in black on the lower right, though difficult to decipher. A beautiful Impressionist landscape painting on board depicting a rustic village before mountainsides and set in a gilded ornate frame under glass. The scene includes several vernacular thatched cottages, verdant foliage, and tiny stuffage figures in the middle distance. The artist's masterful Impressionist style captures the essence of the scene with loose brushstrokes as well as dynamic palette knife work conjuring a sense of spontaneity and softly conveying the forms, an emphasis on light effects, and an embrace of color that makes for a rich contrast between the more saturated green and russet hues with the pastel blue and white hues of the distant mountains and skies above. There is a very old label from J.A. Cooling and Sons of London on the verso. Size: 11" W x 6.875" H (27.9 cm x 17.5 cm); 16.25" W x 12" H (41.3 cm x 30.5 cm) with framing

Condition
Losses to gallery paper on verso. Old label from J.A. Cooling and Sons of London on the verso. Frame shows some wear and a few losses to high-pointed areas. Painting itself seems to be in excellent shape. "1948" is handwritten on the board on verso; however, having consulted with experts in the field, in addition to the fact that that number may have been added later (in fact the "19" and the "48" appear to have been written by different hands), we believe that piece was painted in the 19th century.
