Eliza Agnetus Emillius Nijhoff - also Eliza A. E. Nijhoff (Dutch, 1826-1903), untitled landscape painting on canvas, mid to late 19th century CE. Signed at lower right. A striking oil on canvas that presents many hallmarks of the realistic Dutch landscape painting tradition; this veristic rendering appeals to the senses by capturing the qualities of daylight, fresh air, and warm sunshine. Here we see tiny figures working in harmony with nature. A woman is washing clothes in a stream; the figure behind her is about to go fishing - carrying a fishing pole - accompanied by a faithful dog; above on the bridge is a group of men with a cow pulling a wagon of hay. The vernacular architecture and the working class denizens emphasize the Dutch penchant for depicting the daily lives of the middle-class which was quite pioneering for its time. An outstanding work created with stellar technique and replete with sharp realism characteristic of the Dutch tradition as well as touches of Impressionism. Size: 24.25" W x 16.875" H (61.6 cm x 42.9 cm); 30.25" W x 23" H (76.8 cm x 58.4 cm) including frame.
It is widely accepted that landscape painting as an independent genre originated with the Dutch. The primary inspiration for this was of course the picturesque natural condition of the Dutch countryside - the atmosphere, sky, light, reflections in bodies of water, the almost theatrical quality of the clouds and sunshine, magical twilight, shadows of the trees cast upon nearby fields . . .all of these effects and more moved artists to paint the land. Another reason for the rise of Dutch landscape painting was that no other country was as free of religious and royal patronage during the Golden Age.
